Chuck Hampton is my friend. I’ve never embraced him, shook his hands, looked him in the eyes or raised a glass of cheer with him. Nevertheless, his passing over a month ago has left a void inside of me as deeply as if I had sat in his home on a weekly basis enjoying oysters and beer while we bantered about the various political and social issues of the day.

Obama and FBI Clinton Investigation
What does President Barack Obama know about the FBI investigation into Hillary Clinton’s use of a private email server while she served as Secretary of State? This is the one million dollar question flowing out of his Thursday endorsement of Clinton.
As president, Obama should not be privy to an ongoing criminal investigation. At least, not until the findings of that investigation have been completed and released to the public.
Trump, My White Bigot
Donald J. Trump is my white bigot. I mean every African American that I know in my generation has a white bigot they can point to as the epitome of racial prejudice in American. Trump has not always been my personal white bigot. But it seems a white bigot has always been present at every stage of my three-score years pulse in the earth.

It was a silent punch, as swift and as silent as the punch that dropped Sonny Liston to the canvass in Lewiston,Maine 51 years ago last month. Trump’s African American
“Trump’s African American” has a certain bothersome ring to it. I can not believe I heard him say he has an African American. Let us not make any mistake about it, presumptive Republican Presidential nominee Donald J. Trump has an African American.
Trump is apparently thrilled with his relationship with his African American. He boldly made a crowd aware of his friend, oh, I mean his African American, in Redding, California during a campaign stop on Friday.

President Donald J. Trump
I have started this piece probably ten times or more. Each time the implausibility of a President Donald J. Trump administration has caused me to scrap my verbiage and start anew. Like many Americans who have lived their lives aspiring to the higher ideals of American democracy, the thought of four years or more of President Donald J. Trump sends me into a panic of disbelief.
Jury Duty is Essential to Justice
Jury duty is essential to obtaining justice in the round, which is the title of my latest book on the American jury system (Justice in the Round: Essays on the American Jury System, Cascade Publishing House, 2015). In it I opined that the criminal justice system does not work if good people do not show up for jury duty when summoned to put their lives on hold for however long it takes to settle a dispute between their neighbors.
